A double win in Motherwell

25/05/2017

Motherwell, round 7 of the Matrix Fitness GP Tour Series was the ‘home’ round for Olympic and World Champion, Katie Archibald and British Criterium Champion, Eileen Roe. With both riders, having won here previously, Archibald in 2015 and Roe in 2016, it was certainly becoming a Scottish tradition for a Scot to take individual honours, and Tuesday was no different!

A fast and furious start, Hannah Walker was covering the early break away moves, but it was British Criterium champion, Eileen Roe who made the first successful breakaway of the night, being joined by Manon Lloyd, Annasley Park and Lizzy Banks. The quartet pulled out a lead of over 1 minute and with little chase behind, Katie Archibald was determined to bridge the gap with only 6 laps remaining with Becks Durrell and Mel Lowther in tow.

With a little over half a lap to go the junction was made, having two Team WNT riders in the front group, it was the perfect scenario. Eileen Roe took the downhill left hand corner so fast, Archibald was unable to hold onto her Roe’s wheel, giving Roe the springboard she needed to put daylight between her and her breakaway rivals.

Celebrating with 75metres to go, Roe continued to make history, taking her individual tally to 6 as well as taking back to back wins in Motherwell after her win 12 months previous, and her win 3 day previously on Saturday in Bath. But it was all about the important placings behind, with Katie Archibald placing 3rd in a photo-finish, and Lydia Boylan winning the bunch sprint for 8th, it meant that for the 3rd time this year, Team WNT Pro Cycling won the team win overall on the night!

With Archibald’s storming ride to bridge across to the breakaway, it meant she won her 2nd Brother Cycling Fastest lap of the 2017 series in a time of 1.42.452.
