Hayley Simmonds took the early lead in the 26.6km time trial from Agurain to Gasteiz, posting a time of 35:28. The course featured two small climbs, but was mostly flat or somewhat downhill, a route which suited the 2-times British Champion.
All the team had strong rides, Elise Maes, Natalie Grinczer, Anna Badegruber and Gabrielle Pilote – Fortin, despite suffering from a migraine. But it was 20-year old Aafke Soet, who posted a storming time to win the best u23, and taking the pink u23 leaders jersey too.
Hayley Simmonds finished in 12th position, her first UCI WWT top 20, 1’28” down on the world champion, Annemiek van Vlueten. Soet finished 19th overall on the stage, putting two WNT – ROTOR riders in the top 20.
The team go into stage 3, a 114.5km stage to defend Soet’s 24” lead in the young riders jersey. Stage 3 starts and finishes in Aretxabaleta.
